What is in your bin? A reflection of society? (yes) A missed opportunity? (possibly) A lost resource? (almost definitely).
Mouths a-vape
For Councils planning environmental services, and Government looking at introducing waste-related laws, it is important to understand what the problem is (how much waste and what is in it), in order to design policy and services that both extract valuable resources and mitigate polluting materials. An example is the single use vape ban which came into effect on Monday this week (hurrah!), which may or may not be effective depending on how vape producers adapt and how vape retailers participate in take back schemes (possibly, hurroo!). But let’s be optimistic (vape bin half full!).
Data & Behaviour
The point of the above ramble is that understanding the base problem is fundamental to designing the solution. Another key part is behaviour. This is key to the vape issue, but behaviour is also fundamental in many other aspects of waste management like preventing waste, reusing items, taking them for repair and recycling.
Solutions
These primary data knowledge gaps can be addressed through the following, both of which we can support on:
- through waste composition analysis (undertaken with our lovely partners at Integrated Skills Limited) so the character of the waste can be determined, and;
- explore perceptions and behaviours through our public consultation and stakeholder engagement activities, and what views might mean for services.
If it is of interest as to what’s in your bin and / or what people might be persuaded to do with it, then contact us and we can help you deliver more efficient and effective policies and services.
Puns notwithstanding, we should of course all be aiming for bins almost all empty (#resource efficiency)!!
